It is a film about a girl, who is trying to cope with the loss of her parents and must try to find a way to move on from it. The girl visits Lisbon, Portugal and then heads back home. Along the way she encounters many people that helped her in some way or another as well as helps them as well they appreciate this kind of support as much as she needs it. As you progress throughout the movie, you watch her evolve into someone who does not need anyone else which mirrors what we all go through when we lose someone we care for deeply. It is only after she finds herself and her true love that she can find peace within herself and move forward. This was a movie I found on the internet but did not know much about it other than the fact it starred Meg Ryan and Richard Gere and was directed by Richard Attenborough. When I first viewed this film, I was blown away by the story told. It is such a sad but inspiring story of what you go through when you loose someone you care for deeply. This movie helped me realize that everyone will get through difficult times in their lives aided by others who care for them to help them in some way or another. This movie is meditative since many of the scenes show Lisbon on the screen with beautiful landscape in it while Meg Ryan talks about her life. It is very metaphoric and it makes you think while watching the movie which I love. The plot of this film is essentially that one can help others in their lives to help them cope with things that they cannot go through alone. It is told through out Meg Ryan's character that she has been struggling to cope with her loss of parents for awhile now and that she needs to let go of it before she can move forward in life. The way she helps people feels like a second lease on life seeing as how no one else will be there to do it for her when she needs them most. In fact, the two people who did not want to help her in any way were her best friends. In a way, everyone should realize that if they lose someone in their life they will need other people to help them get through it. The last scene of the movie really stands out to me because it shows how Meg Ryan's character has matured and she realizes that there is a guy out there that can make everything else feel better. This movie uses a great deal of symbolism throughout the film. Perhaps the most obvious is when Meg Ryan's character goes to Lisbon, Portugal and while she is there she takes pictures of all the different landmarks and travels around with them back home with her. She then realizes that her past is in her past and in the future she will be in a better place. The cinematography in this film is absolutely gorgeous. It uses a lot of shades of grey and blues to make the film look cool and cool. There are many night shots throughout the movie which really help you feel how cold it was when she was in Portugal. The characters that Meg Ryan's character meets along the way are all well developed and their personalities fit into her life perfectly. In fact, I never got tired of watching this movie because there were always people who helped Meg Ryan's character out no matter what time it was at when they caught up to her.
